Since 1918, the International Institute of Buffalo has assisted immigrants, refugees, and others who face linguistic and cultural barriers to become self-sufficient, active members of our community. Today, the Institute serves as a dynamic international center, providing critical services to refugees and immigrants and promoting global understanding and connections in Western New York.

In 2009, 12,740 people from all walks of life and many countries around the world benefited from our programs and services, including:

  • 314 refugees arriving from Burma, Eritrea Iraq, Iran, Ivory Coast, and Somalia
  • 5,859 interpreting and translation clients
  • 3,977 participants in the Model United Nations and other education programs
  • 35 pre-certified victims of Human Trafficking
  • 155 victims of Domestic Violence
  • 606 other legal clients with immigration concerns
  • 125 international exchange participants and students hosted and assisted
