IIB Awarded Grant from Susan G. Komen For the Cure

Published Wednesday, April 8, 2009

April 7,2009 (Buffalo, NY) – The Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure®, one of over 100 Affiliates nationwide dedicated to putting an end to breast cancer, recently awarded a community grant totaling $24,364.00 to The International Institute of Buffalo.

The goal of the proposed project is to increase breast cancer knowledge and to address concerns of refugees and immigrants, in relation to the disease. This will result in increase of screening behavior among this population.

Many refugee and immigrant women refrain from talking about breast cancer for fear that, by talking about it, they will get the disease.  This results in a low number of women who actually seek clinical examinations or mammography services.  The number is even lower among women who know they are of high risk.  Lack of knowledge about breast cancer’s definition, cause, and early detection indicate an urgent need for outreach and education to refugee and immigrant women.  The project will also connect participants with breast cancer survivors and medical staff, in an attempt to provide holistic responses to their questions and concerns.
