Training and Workshops

  • Is your agency required by law to improve access for clients with limited English proficiency?
  • Would your company like to provide better service to non-English-speaking customers, suppliers, distributors, or business partners?
  • Does your school educate immigrant students?

If you fall into any one of these categories (and in the 21st century, most of us do!) then the International Institute's Building Bridges across Language and Cultural Barriers training programs can help your organization create meaningful changes in services and procedures that will improve communication and client and customer satisfaction.

We also provide frequent training opportunities for interpreters, especially those who would like to join the International Institute's list of approved freelance interpreters and translators.

Interpreter Training Workshops

Interpreter training workshops are designed to help people who are proficient in both English and a second language gain proficiency and confidence in a variety of medical, social service, legal, and other settings. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants receive a certificate of attendance and an opportunity fo join the International Institute's list of recommended freelance interpreters and translators.

Workshops are led by Dr. Felicidad Frenette, Director of Language Services at the International Institute, in conjunction with Education Coordinator May Shogan and other Institute staff. Dr. Frenette has designed and conducted numerous multicultural and language access training programs and interpreter workshops throughout the Northeast.

For more information on these opportunities, or to set up a workshop, contact Felicidad Frenette at (716) 883-1900 x318 or ffrenette@iibuff.org.

Building Bridges across Language and Culture
Training Workshops for Healthcare and Social Service Agencies, Companies, Government Agencies, and Schools

International Institute training workshops can help your agency, company, school, or other organization improve communication with people you serve each and every day who do not speak English and may not share your cultural understandings. With workshops that are tailored to the specific needs of your organization, we teach strategies and processes to improve professional communication and effective client and customer service.

Training topics include:

  • working with interpreters
  • training bilingual staff as "dual role" interpreters
  • developing interpreter/translator and cultural competency plans
  • utilizing phone interpreters
  • identifying which written materials should be translated, and into which languages
  • becoming aware of how cultural misunderstandings can contribute to ineffective interaction
  • teaching techniques to avoid misunderstandings

"When two people first meet, they can only have a very ordinary kind of friendship. But when you begin to understand each other, when you get close to them, you discover that you're suddenly eager to know him or her even better."
